  2. Rank the Two Division Leaders: Drag to decide which of your two division winners you think will have the better overall conference record — that determines who plays which wild card in Round 1.
  3. Pick Your 2 Wild Cards: Choose the 2 teams (from either division) you think will grab the conference's wild card spots, and rank them WC1 (better) and WC2.

Why the NHL Bracket Is Different

No conference-wide reseeding. No 1-vs-8 ladder. Just four divisions playing their own mini-tournament.

Most leagues seed their playoff bracket 1 through 8 across the whole conference and let the winners climb a single ladder. The NHL doesn't. Each conference splits into two divisions, and the top three finishers in each division get locked into that division's own bracket group from Round 1 all the way to the Conference Final. The two groups per conference never cross paths early — they only meet once, when a single berth in the Stanley Cup Final is on the line.

That structure means a stacked division can eat itself alive. It's entirely possible for the team with the third-best record in the entire conference to get eliminated in Round 1 simply because it happened to finish third in a brutal division, while a weaker team from the other division cruises past a beatable Round 1 matchup. Predicting the bracket means predicting division strength, not just which teams are "good."

How the Round 1 Cross-Matching Works

The one moment the two division groups actually talk to each other.

Division Leaders vs. The Other Division's Wild Cards

The division winner with the better overall conference record faces the weaker wild card (WC2). The other division winner faces the stronger wild card (WC1). It's the only point in the bracket where the two divisions interact before the Conference Final.

The second- and third-place finishers within the same division play each other, regardless of how their records compare to the other division. Division rivals collide immediately.

Locked In, No Reseeding

Whoever survives Round 1 in a division group plays the other Round 1 winner from that same group in the Second Round — never a team from the other division. The two group winners only meet at the Conference Final.
