Predicting an NFL playoff field means more than picking 7 good teams — it means picking the right 4 division winners, the right 3 wild cards, and living with how a single bye week can reshape an entire bracket.
Two layers of qualification make NFL seeding uniquely tricky to call.
Unlike leagues that simply take the top records regardless of division, the NFL guarantees a playoff spot to whoever wins each of its 8 divisions — even a division winner with a mediocre record gets in ahead of a stronger team that finished second in a loaded division. That's why predicting the field starts with picking 4 division champions per conference, not just ranking teams 1 through 7.
Only after the four division winners are locked in do the 3 wild card spots get filled by the best remaining teams in the conference, regardless of division. A team can miss the playoffs with 11 wins if its division is stacked, while a 9-win division winner from a weaker group gets in — and even hosts a home playoff game. Predicting who threads that needle is most of the challenge.

Wild Card Round — No. 1 Seed Sits Out
While seeds 2 through 7 play three win-or-go-home games (2v7, 3v6, 4v5), the No. 1 seed rests. It's a full week of recovery and preparation while every other contender risks elimination.
Divisional Round — Reseeding Kicks In
The No. 1 seed enters against whichever surviving team has the lowest seed number — always the "easiest" matchup on paper. The other two Wild Card winners are paired against each other regardless of their original seed.
Conference Championship & Super Bowl
The two Divisional Round winners in each conference meet for the Conference Championship. The AFC and NFC champions then meet in the Super Bowl at a pre-determined neutral site.
