MLS runs one of the most unusual playoff formats in American sports — a single-game wild card feeding into a best-of-3 first round, then a pure knockout the rest of the way. Here's how it all fits together.
Unlike every other major US league, MLS doesn't use divisions at all.
With 30 clubs split evenly into an Eastern and a Western Conference, MLS keeps seeding simple: no divisions, no automatic bids tied to a sub-group — just a straight table of 15 teams per conference, with the top 9 in each making the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. That's 18 of the league's 30 teams reaching the postseason, one of the most inclusive playoff formats in US sports.
The top 7 finishers in each conference go straight into Round One. The 8th and 9th-place teams don't get that luxury — they have to survive a single win-or-go-home Wild Card match first, with the winner earning the right to face the conference's No. 1 seed.
The only best-of-3 round in the entire bracket.
Wild Card Match — Single Elimination
Seed 8 hosts Seed 9 in a straight knockout game. If it's level after 90 minutes, there's no extra time — straight to penalty kicks to decide who advances.
Round One — Best-of-3 Series
Seed 1 waits for the Wild Card winner; Seeds 2-7 pair off immediately (2v7, 3v6, 4v5). Whoever wins 2 games first in each series advances — the only multi-game round in the whole playoffs.
Conference Semis, Finals & MLS Cup — Back to Single Games
Once Round One is done, everything reverts to single-elimination: Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals, and the MLS Cup Final are all one-off matches, with the higher remaining seed hosting.
That's exactly why our simulator treats Round One differently from every other matchup: it needs 2 wins to clinch instead of a single result, and the bracket locks in the Conference Semifinal pairings from the very start — there's no re-seeding once results start coming in.

That's a real MLS rule — Round One is the only multi-game series in the entire postseason. It gives the round with the most seeds involved (and the freshly-arrived Wild Card winner) a fairer, less luck-dependent format before the bracket switches to single-elimination for the rest of the way.
MLS fixes the Conference Semifinal pairings before Round One even starts: the Seed 1 group always meets the Seed 4/5 group, and the Seed 2/7 group always meets the Seed 3/6 group, regardless of which specific teams survive. Our simulator follows that same fixed structure.
